We’ve all been there: planning an event and trying to save money wherever possible. And with something as costly as a wedding, looking to cut costs can definitely feel like a no-brainer.
However, the number of horror stories I’ve heard over time is quite surprising. I’ve had brides message me after their special day, completely devastated after booking another photographer, unhappy with the quality of the images or the overall service. When it comes to something as important as your wedding day, those memories deserve to be captured properly.
In this blog, I aim to break down some of the real risks you face when booking a less expensive wedding photographer.
Now with all that said, I shot my first wedding back in 2023 for as little as £200 for a half-day service, now that’s a bargain! This was because it was a family matter, and I had no experience in the wedding sector at the time. Looking back, this is definitely NOT something I would suggest to new and upcoming wedding photographers looking to get into the industry… but let’s save that for another blog, otherwise you’ll be reading this all day!
Anyway, let’s get into it.
First and foremost, it could be that you book with a budget-friendly large wedding photography company - yanno one that sends photographers out on the day. It’s affordable and sounds great, however you most likely won’t know who is coming to shoot your wedding until, well… your actual wedding day. With my business, I offer a personal service, getting to know my clients, what they want, and their specific vision for their day. Having that level of communication can be worth it purely for your peace of mind.
Lack of Experience
Next, cheap doesn’t always mean good. Sometimes when someone has very low prices it can be due to lack of experience. Whilst yes, I know this might sound slightly ironic coming from me, considering I shot my first wedding with no experience, unless it’s someone you know personally like a family member, booking someone with wedding experience is incredibly important. You’re (hopefully!) never going to do this day again, and that’s what makes it so special. It’s crucial to book someone who understands weddings and the pace of the day. That experience might come from photographing many weddings themselves or even assisting and second shooting for other photographers. It’s the little things that come with experience, like knowing how to handle different lighting situations, managing group photos efficiently, and understanding how a wedding day naturally flows. A photographer with experience can reassure you and help guide parts of the day so everything runs smoothly.
You want to feel confident and have full faith in your photographer.
Lack of backup plans.
Another big thing that often comes with cheaper wedding photography is lack of backup plans. Professional wedding photographers don’t just turn up with one camera and hope for the best. Most of us bring multiple camera bodies, spare lenses, extra batteries and backup memory cards. Weddings move fast and there are no second chances. If something stops working during the ceremony or speeches, we need to switch equipment instantly without missing a moment. With very low-cost photography services, sometimes that level of preparation simply isn’t there. Cameras, lenses, editing software, insurance and storage all cost a lot, which is why professional wedding photography pricing can sometimes surprise couples when they first start planning their wedding.
Editing time.
Another reality couples don’t always think about is editing time. Taking photos on the wedding day is only part of the job. After the wedding, photographers spend hours, I mean days, going through thousands of images, selecting the best moments, colour correcting, adjusting lighting, and carefully editing the final gallery so everything feels polished and consistent. If someone is charging extremely low prices, they may not be able to dedicate the same amount of time to editing your images. This can sometimes lead to galleries being delivered quickly but lacking the polish and storytelling that couples expect when they look back on their wedding memories.
Reliability and professionalism.
There’s also the question of reliability and professionalism. When you book a professional wedding photographer, you’re usually getting a contract, insurance, clear communication and a structured booking process. These things might seem boring compared to the fun parts of planning a wedding, but they are incredibly important. Contracts protect both you and the photographer, making sure everyone understands what’s included, how many hours are covered, and when you’ll receive your images. Insurance is also something many venues require from suppliers.
Now, with all that said, I want to be clear about one thing: every photographer starts somewhere.
Many talented photographers begin by offering lower prices while they build their experience and portfolio, and that doesn’t automatically mean they won’t do a great job.
The key difference is transparency and trust.
If someone is new but honest about their experience, shows real work, and communicates well, that can still be a positive experience. What couples should avoid is booking purely based on the lowest price without really understanding who is photographing their day. Your wedding photographs are the memories you will look back on for the rest of your life. Long after the cake is eaten, the flowers are gone and the decorations are packed away, your photos are what remain.
So when choosing your photographer, try to look beyond just the price. Think about the experience you want, the trust you feel with that person, and the style of images you want to remember your day by.
